However, what is required in practice is not simply collecting aerial images. If it will be used for maintenance management or internal reporting, the results need to be presented in a way that non-specialists can understand. In short, even with the same drone survey, what should be delivered depends on the intended purpose.


However, if this understanding is misaligned at the commissioning stage, even abundant received data can easily become unusable on site. You may have images that look good but are difficult to use for quantity checks, point clouds that exist but make cross-sectional verification time-consuming, or drawings that are hard to align with coordinates. Therefore, when choosing a service provider, you should not only ask "In what formats can you deliver?" but also check whether they will help you sort out "What will likely be needed for our operations?"


A truly reliable vendor does more than simply accept requests; it can also propose designs for deliverables tailored to the project’s objectives. A company that anticipates how downstream processes will use the outputs—uses that on-site personnel may not have noticed—and compiles them in a form that is neither excessive nor lacking will, as a result, improve the efficiency of the entire operation. What I particularly want to confirm is the provider’s attitude toward handling additional questions or minor adjustments that arise after delivery. In practice, it’s often only after the team starts using the delivered work that they notice issues. A company that responds carefully while understanding the background at that point can greatly reduce the operational burden. Conversely, if the provider is completely inflexible after delivery, the on-site team may end up having to handle extra adjustment work.


Ease of on-site attendance and coordination with stakeholders is also important. When adjustments with the site safety officer, construction manager, or partner companies are required, a company that can coordinate efficiently and in an organized way is less likely to disrupt the overall workflow. The quality of drone surveying depends not only on analysis but also on the smoothness of on-site operations on the day. For that reason, collaborative capability should not be overlooked as a selection criterion.


Common Pitfalls When Requesting Drone Surveys

So far we have reviewed the criteria for choosing a service provider, but in the field failures can also occur because of the way requests are made. A common mistake is issuing a request that simply says, "Please measure with a drone." That does not convey why the measurement is needed, what level of accuracy is required, or how the results will be used.
